A woman walks into the Doctor’s office and says, “Hey Doc, I have a problem. Every time I hit myself in the head with a hammer, I get a headache.” The Dr. replies, “Well, quit hitting yourself!” She put the hammer down and was cured. Or, in my case, I logged off Facebook, turned off the news, and was cured. No more headache, no more anxiety.

I think this latest tragedy has pushed me over the edge. I no longer want to be informed about everything, because now I believe I’m being misinformed and manipulated. I started feeling like I needed to disinfect myself every time I went on Facebook. Chaos, opinions, hatred, and division. And it seems like everyone has an agenda. I trust the Marion Republican will tell me if the world is about to blow up, but other than that, I’m done with the circus.

Jesus gave the Disciples a list of catastrophic future events. In that list, He said there would be “wars and rumors of wars.” A rumor is defined as a currently circulating story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth. Who knows, maybe Jesus was prophesying about social media.

But I think the biggest problem of it all is that when we spend too much time hearing the world’s opinions and views, we lose sight of God’s perspective. I promise you this, when you have God’s perspective, you won’t be stressed.

There’s a story in the Old Testament about a prophet named Elisha. Elisha was so attuned to hearing God’s voice he was able to tell the King of Israel the battle plans of their enemies. That made him a target for their invaders. One day a vast army, with all their horses and chariots, came to kill him. The Bible says Elisha’s servant looked out the window and freaked out. He went to Elisha in a panic, saying, “what are we going to do?!”

Elisha never even got up and looked out the window. He simply told the servant that they had a bigger army fighting for them than the one against them. Then he asked God to open the servant’s eyes so he could see what was truly happening. The servant’s eyes were suddenly open to see what Elisha already knew by faith. There were chariots of fire surrounding the invading army, as far as the eye could see. The enemy never stood a chance. If God is for us, no man can be against us. Now that’s the proper, God style, perspective.

If I were to put that story in a modern perspective, the servant would be the guy glued to the national news channels and scrolling Facebook. Elisha would be the guy chilling on the front porch, sipping sweet tea, and reading his Bible. So out of the two, who do you think is better informed? It all depends on your perspective.

I know some people can log on to social media and not let the brouhaha affect them. Evidently, I am not one of those people. Since I logged off, I feel like I have been to the spa. Seriously, I feel that much better. I don’t come back from vacation this relaxed.

So, Marion Republican, I trust you to not push an agenda on me and to keep me as informed as I am willing to be. I thank you for never making me feel manipulated, and always being ready to let us know the great things that are happening in our community. In a day when good news doesn’t sell, you are an anomaly. Let me know if the world is about to blow up. Till then, you will find me on the front porch drinking tea and soaking up God’s word.
