We’ve had some exciting days at the McCloskey household.  Unfortunately, not the kind of exciting anyone wants to deal with.  Saturday afternoon, our home experienced major power surges, and we began to smell smoke.  The Fire Department was called, and they were WONDERFUL!  I can’t say enough good things about those guys.  They determined the cause of the smoke (our scorching furnace and appliances) and didn’t leave our home until Ameren arrived and fixed the faulty transformer that caused the damages.

In the aftermath, sitting in my chilly but in-tact home, I can’t help but go over all the things that could have happened had this occurred at any other time.  On any other day, it’s doubtful we would have been home to turn off our breaker box or call the fire department before the unthinkable happened. And I shudder to think what could have happened had we been sleeping.

Looking at the scorched parts inside my washing machine was enough to convince me that we were supernaturally protected and blessed beyond all measure.  I may have lost some appliances and had the scare of a lifetime, but I still have a home, 3 wagging tails, and a husband.  I am thankful and blessed.   Thank you, Lord, for being so good to us!

Thank you to the Marion Fire Department!  You were the calming force that kept me from having my own melt-down.  Thank you to the Ameren workers that came out on a Saturday and made our home safe to re-enter.  Thank you to our electrician, Oliver Miner, who came and installed new smoke and gas detectors, so I won’t be too afraid to sleep at night.  And thank you to all our friends and neighbors that have gone above and beyond to help us through this debacle.

As we enter the Thanksgiving season, stop and think of all we have to be grateful for.  If you have a home, even if you’re drowning in debt, be grateful.  If you have a family, even if they are dysfunctional, be thankful.  And if you have heat, well, please invite me over, it’s cold at my house!  In all seriousness, be appreciative that we live in community that’s quick to respond to a disaster.  And remember how blessed we are to have a Savior who thought we were worth dying for and now lives to help and protect us.
