My staff and I just received our COVID vaccine.  We wanted to make the community safer and reduce fear of the injection. So, we “manned up” and got inoculated.  I wasn’t afraid of the vaccine, or COVID for that matter.  What scares me is the thought of living without purpose, of never fulfilling my destiny.  2020 stole too many people’s dreams and taught us to live life waiting for the other shoe to drop.  Yep, 2020 could be coined as the Year of the Tap Dancer.

I used to watch a competition show called So You Think You Can Dance.  They welcomed all dance genres to the show, but the ones that stood out to me were the tap dancers and the ballet dancers.  The quick rhythm of the tap dancers, rat a tat tat, rat a tat tat, was always in sharp contrast to the graceful ballerina flying through the air.  The two crafts were so different; it was amazing they were both considered “dance.”

Before coming to Christ, I lived in step with the cadence of the tap dancer.  No matter how hard I tried or what I did, the other shoe just kept on falling.  This past year has had me tempted to live that way again.  To start asking, along with so many others, “what’s next?!”  But as believers, we were never called to live from crisis to crisis.  We are called to live from glory to glory.  That means the same circumstances, different outlook, and a much different outcome.

You see, for both the tap dancer and the ballerina, the other shoe has to fall.  It’s what they do with their foot when it hits the ground that changes the outcome.  The tap dancer uses the falling foot to power the next thundering footfall.  The ballerina uses the falling foot to launch her into the air.  She leaps, she spins, she flies.  The tap dancer just keeps tapping out their rat a tat tats.  They may spin, but they never fly.

Jesus didn’t die an agonizing death and then rise again so we could live our lives on the ground, barely making it.  We are created to dream His dreams.  To have His visions.  To expand His Kingdom.  We are born again to leap and dance.  We are created to fly.

Right before Christmas, I felt the Father ask me, “Aren’t you tired of living from crisis to crisis?”   I knew He was inviting me to use the “crisis de jour” to propel me higher.  He wants me to dream again.  He wants me to learn to fly.  And I gotta say, the mountains of disaster don’t look as scary from up high.

Are you worn out from the tap dance?  Ready to join the ballet?  Luckily for us (and the rest of the community), that doesn’t mean squeezing into a tutu.  It means opening the Word and finding a verse that puts wind in your sails.  It means telling Jesus you trust Him and are ready to start dreaming dreams and using what the world dishes out as a springboard to launch you higher.  You’re not a chicken.  You’re an eagle, and Jesus wants you to teach you to fly.
